You are bidding on 10 OLDHAM'S GIANT TIMBER BAMBOO SEEDS - Bambusa OldamiiOne of the best bamboos for large, dense screens. This is a tall, straight timber bamboo that grows classic huge, 50' bamboo poles 4"-6" in diameter. It's tall but very straight and works well as a single specimen planting or spread 5'-6' apart to make a beautiful green screen. The culms are straight and erect with relatively short branches forming fairly open clumps. Culm walls are thick, but soft. This is the famous Oldhamii timber bamboo used throughout Walt Disney World. Oldhamii produces tall and very straight timber in a tight clumping pattern. It is truly a well behaved giant. This is a very easy plant to grow which requires little attention once rooted. Commonly used for large privacy hedges and windbreaks on large properties. Maximum Height: 40-65'Culm diameter: 4"Minimum Temperature: 15-20FLight: Full Sun Germination:Germinating them isn't easy. Best is to let the seeds soak in tepid water for about 12 hours then hardly cover seeds with moist soil and store at a warm place at about 25°C. It's important to always keep constant moisture what could be improved by simply covering the pot with kitchen foil but anyway it has to be ventilated twice a day to avoid mold. Depending on temperature germination will start after about 4-5 weeks. Medicinal use : The leaves are used in the treatment of arthritic inflammations. The sheaths of the stem are used in the treatment of nausea and sour stomach. Edible parts : Young shoots - cooked. Very palatable when cooked but acrid raw. Not of the highest quality, but their large size makes them very popular. Extensively eaten in China, they are usually cooked in one change of water. The shoots are harvested in the spring when they are about 8 cm above the ground, cutting them about 5 cm below soil level. The dormant young shoots, harvested in the winter before they emerge above the ground, are especially relished as a delicacy.Other uses : The canes make good water pipes, they are also used for household utensils etc. The short internodes at the lower end of the cane are used as flasks, vases etc. Although the wood is relatively soft, the canes are much used for heavy construction, weaving various types of handicrafts and paper making. The rhizomes are used as walking sticks and umbrella handles. See my store for 600+ seeds , live plants ( during the warmer months ) and over 300+ books on plants and gardening .
