Description: ORIGINAL 17th CENTURY ETCHING PORTRAIT OF HENRICUS [HENDRIK, or HENRY] CORNELIS VROOM, HAARLEM MARINE PAINTER, WITH SHIPS IN THE BACKGROUND. Etching by ESME DE BOULONOIS (French; active 1645-1681). The subject, Hendrik Cornelis Vroom (1566-1640), was a Haarlem-based painter who is considered to be the father of the great Dutch tradition of marine painting. Signed in the plate, bottom right, and with the caption in Latin. Size is approx 18 x 13 centimetres. CONDITION. Good. Trimmed to the image line, text in French to reverse, and laid down on a support sheet of an old English-language book (totally unrelated but provides firm support). A nice clear and clean impression. Printed on thin "laid" paper. See my photo on the lightbox. REFERENCE: Royal Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London ref. PAD4269 Also: note Hollstein 178 - a copy in reverse of the earlier portrait attributed to Simon Frisius. ***ALL MY ITEMS ARE SENT - UK & WORLDWIDE - BY TRACKED ROYAL MAIL SERVICE, FOR EVERYONE'S PEACE OF MIND. *** I COMBINE ITEMS FOR SHIPPING ***
