Oken was born Lorenz Okenfuss and studied natural history and medicine at the universities of Freiburg and Würzburg. He went on to the University of Göttingen, where he became a Privatdozent (unsalaried lecturer), and shortened his name to Oken. He became a leader of the movement of "Naturphilosophie" in Germany. He was influenced by Pythagorean mysticism, becoming a self-proclaimed pantheist. In his time, this German physician, philosopher, and mystic was considered a brilliant thinker by many Americans, including the New England transcendentalists. To Oken, God exhibited himself in nature, and when God meets man he meets himself, for man is a god created by God.Artwork medium & description: These beautiful lithographs are from the work entitled "Abbildungen zu Okens allgemeiner Naturgeschichte für alle Stände" with illustrations by Johann Susemihl (1767-1847).
