ADDITIONAL INFO Alexander Friedrich Franz Hoffmann (born February 21, 1814 in Bernburg , † July 11, 1882 in Dresden ) was a German youth and popular writers and booksellers . Alexander Friedrich Franz Hoffmann attended grammar school in Bernburg until the age of fifteen, then went to Stuttgart and entered the bookstore of his older brother Karl as an apprentice. During his apprenticeship, he often attended the theater and was inclined to become an actor, but renounced persuasions of his relatives on it and continued to assist his brother as an assistant. Later he started his own business and founded his own bookstore in 1839 in Zurich , then in Goslar . In 1842 Hoffmann published his first youth writings. These were so applauded that he decided to earn his money only as a writer. To improve his lack of education he heard in Halle lectures in philosophy and the natural sciences and acquired in the former discipline the doctoral degree. In the next few years he spent time in Ballenstedt am Harz, Stuttgart, Halle and Dessau, living in poverty despite his tireless work . In 1856 he chose Dresden as a permanent residence, where he lived very reclusive and died in 1882 after suffering long, serious illness at the age of 68 years. He was married three times and left three daughters. During his 40-year literary career Hoffmann wrote against 250 larger and much smaller stories, which appeared partly individually, partly in collections and magazines. For the publication of his works, he entered into contracts with a total of ten publishers, in particular Schmidt & Spring. In some years, as a result of contractual obligations, he had to provide the booksellers with more than 20 extensive stories, which are therefore often schematized in structure and linguistic expression. Among the critical historians of the youth literature especially Heinrich Wolgast noted in his work The misery of our youth literature(1896) the low level of Hoffmann's works and their tendency to distort reality. Nevertheless, most of Hoffmann's writings were widely used in his lifetime and had several editions; some of them have been translated into many modern cultural languages. The tales of Hoffmann intended for children and adolescents usually have a strong moral and religious character. For example, this tendency is characterized by his easily understandable short stories, such as 150 moral narratives for small children (1842) for early childhood to eighth year , which have almost the character of an edification script and no less than 17 editions, fairy tales and Fables for Young Children (1842), Storybook for the Nursery (1844) and others. In some respects, Hoffmann's youth writings generally praise moral manners or discourage the shamefulness of a mundane way of life, and sometimes recommend individual virtues such as family love, friendship, honesty, diligence, patience, charity, and helpfulness towards the poor and unfortunate, or warn them of vice like self-sacrifice. and recklessness. In his quest for a vivid portrayal, Hoffmann often falls prey to pedantry and improbability. His heroes are beyond any normal human measure. They are characterized by unnaturally great goodness of heart and morality or by extraordinary viciousness. Moreover, without regard to real relationships through suffering, virtue ultimately always becomes a victory, and vice always leads to destruction (eg.Man thinks, God directs , 1851; How to do it, that's how it's done , 1869). The ultimate reward for decent behavior after endured suffering is often provoked by improbable "coincidences" in Hoffmann's stories. For example, in the story Brave Leute (1856), the distress incurred through no fault of one's own is suddenly turned into good by a lottery prize, a returning, lost relative, and a promissory note found in the Bible . The moral of the story is often already presented in the title in the short and urgent form of a proverb (eg, as the seed, so the harvest , fresh daring is half won , each one of his luck is blacksmith , one man, one word , right must be right , time is money , haughtiness comes before the fall ). Occasionally, however, she also appears in religious dress ( The old God is still alive , 1847. What God does, is well done , 1848. The blessing of the Lord makes one rich without effort, 1849; etc.). None of Hoffmann's narratives carries a decidedly confessional character, some represent tolerance for those of other faiths as godly behavior (eg Moschele , 1854, Schmulche-Leben , 1855), and so they found approval among the members of all confessions. For the author, it is not the person's belonging to a particular ethnic group that matters, but his virtue (eg Mohr and Weisser , 1850). He also tried to portray the differences of status and wealth as insignificant, and to show that satisfaction and happy family life were possible even in the most modest circumstances (eg, Poor and Rich , 1845, True Happiness , 1846, Brave People , 1856; Powerlessness of Wealth , 1859). For many of his works Hoffmann translated and edited thrilling stories of foreign authors for German youth, such as Miguel de Cervantes ' novel Don Quixote ( Life of the noble and brave knight Don Quixote of La Mancha , 1844) and various adventurous novels by James Fenimore Cooper ( Lederstrumpf - stories , 2 vols, 1846;. Narramatta ; Mark's reef , 1855; Conanchet , 1857; the red pirates , 1861; Captain Spike and the Gulf Islands , 1869), Frederick Marryat ( the new Robinson or the wreckage of the Pacific, 1843; Education and Life , 1847, edition of 1873 under the title Jack, the Brave Midshipman ), Jonathan Swift ( Gulliver's Travels in Unknown Lands , 1844), Thomas Mayne Reid ( The Settlers in the Plains , 1854; A Robinson of the Desert ; The Buffalo Hunter by the campfire , 1875) and Robert Montgomery Bird ( The Dangers of the Wild , 1847). The popularity of these adventurous stories prompted Hoffmann to compose even invented similar stories playing in foreign countries or on distant seas ( The Gold Seeker , The Conquest of Mexico , The Treasure of the Inca , The Siege of Boston , Wild Scenes in South Africa ; ua), where he sometimes fabricated plagiarism . In these narratives he used to increase the tension also portrayals of murder and bloodshed, scenes of marly and other cruelties. He borrowed several times his fabrics old fables , fairy tales and legendsthe domestic and foreign literature for very successful own arrangements and collections, so the history of Reineke the Fox (1847), German folk fairy tales (1847); The Most Beautiful Moreas of the Thousand and One Nights (1851); and his German legends (4 vols., 1848-50), were so applauded that in 1853 with Rübezahl and other German legends another band of this genre appeared. Strange historical events also attacked the author for arrangements in a new guise ( German heroes of the past , the story of Tell, 1845; etc.). Likewise, through descriptions of the lives of great men whom he portrayed as role models, he sought to encourage adolescents to emulate them (eg, Mozart's Jugendjahre , 1870, Ludwig van Beethoven , 1871, Schiller 's Jugendjahre , 1872). After the publication of the pocket book for the German Youth (1844-46) Hoffmann made every year just before Christmas a handsome anthology of New German childhood friend appear which row exercised great influence on the German youth and even after his death until the First World War was continued , Each year contains narratives, descriptions from the national and ethnology and from the natural history, biographies, legends, fairy tales, poems, riddles, games and many mostly artistically worthless illustrations. But with the poems he made do with himself, the names of their authors, such as: B. Theodor Storm and Friedrich Hebbelto lead. Another periodical was the youth library founded by him and directed by Schmidt & Spring for many years . He also contributed to Trewendts Youth Library , Kröner's Universal Library for the Youth , Bagel's New Youth Library , as well as a large number of other collected works and youth writings. In addition, Hoffmann also worked for large circles of adults through his numerous folk writing, which are relatively trivial knitted and seek to entertain and instruct without any effort of the intellect. Here, for example, as a tame product of the stormy year 1848, the Politische Hausbüchlein for the German citizen and peasant as well as 300 charades, Worriethsel and Räthselfragen (1849) can be expected. As a mistake, an Illustrirter folk calendar proved that Hoffmann since 1851 with the participation of well-known writers and artists appeared in Monatshefte, but which went in because of its high price in the second year again.
