Clark, 38 George Street, Edinburgh and printed by Morrison And Gibb. Volume 1 has a published date of 1883 on the title page and volume 2 has a published date of 1893 on the title page. They are both stated to be new editions, thoroughly revised and enlarged. The books comprise of 871 pages of the main text, over the two volumes and the pages have been checked and are all present. There are also 8 pages containing the publisher’s catalogue at the back of both volume 1 and volume 2, and 4 pages containing the publisher’s catalogue at the front of volume 1. The 2 volumes in this book are divided as follows: Volume I: Preface, Contents, General Introduction, chapters I to VI. Volume 1 ends at page 404. Volume 2: Chapters VII to XII, and the alphabetical index. Volume 2 ends at page 871. The author, Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a prominent theologian, church historian, and scholar of the 19th century. Born in Switzerland, he later emigrated to the United States, where he became a significant figure in American religious life. He was a professor in Union Theological Seminary, New York from 1870. This book, History of the Christian Church was one of his most notable contributions, this multi-volume work is a comprehensive account of the development of Christianity from its origins to his contemporary period. THESE 2 VOLUMES COVER THE PERIOD A.D. 1-100. However, further books were written in this series, “History of The Christian Church”, which extended to 590. Please note that I am selling the other books for the periods A.D. 100–325 and A.D. 311–590 in two other listings (these are also both over 2 volumes). Schaff went on to publish further works as an extension of this series, which were on ‘Mediaeval Christianity (A.D. 590-1517), and ‘History of The Reformation (A.D. 1517-1648). There are no dust jackets. The two volumes are both bound in the publisher’s original brown cloth, over boards. There are embossed borders and decorations on the boards, and gilt lettering on the spine. On both volumes there is white pen on the spine spelling “COS”. The covers are intact, robust, and in a good condition for at least 131 years old. There is some wear to the covers, and this includes bumping and small rips to the corners, small rips near the top of the spine, including where it adjoins the boards and very small rips at the bottom of the spine, light rubbing at the edges (including where the spine adjoins the boards), and only very light marks. Please see the photographs provided for further reference. Inside, the pages are very lightly tanned, which is good for books of this age. There is some very light foxing to some of the preliminary pages and last few pages of volume 1. Besides this, the pages are in an overall very neat and clean state for their age, with only the very occasional very small mark, which does not affect the text. They are predominantly uncreased, with only very small folds on the first map, and just at the edge of a couple of pages. Many of the edges of the pages are uneven and roughly cut, but this is highly likely due to the construction of this book and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a pen knife. There are many unopened pages (uncut leaves) in volume 2 (see examples of this in the photos provided). Again, this is to do with the construction method of the book and the uncut pages have not been severed from their neighbours with the paperknife. As this forms part of the history of this book, the pages have been left as they have been found, although they can easily be detached from each other should you wish. A small handful of pages have small rips or very small holes near the edges. These do not obscure the text or illustrations. On the inner edge of the pastedowns there are also some small rips (see photos). There is a little pencil on the title page for volume 2 and both volumes have ex libris stickers and book plates pasted to the front pastedowns. There are also some ink and pencil on these. The book plates state “Purchased For The Library Of The Wesleyan College Birmingham”. There is no further pen or pencil written inside these books. The pages are all secure and there are no loose pages or missing pages. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. These 2 volumes are a nice and scarce example of these books, from the late 1800s. Each of the books measure approximately 23.6 cm by 16 cm. Volume 1 is approximately 3.1 cm wide and volume 2 is approximately 3.6 cm wide. The books collectively weigh approximately 1,556 grams. Thank you so much for looking.
