1888 N172 OLD JUDGE GEORGE PINKNEY ERROR WILLIAM BILL ADONIS TERRY PICTURED RARE

Description: Description: #377e Bat On Shoulder Outdoors or 370-5 in The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890) by Joe Gonsowski, Jay Miller, and Richard Masson. This card has nice contrast and a clean back. It appears that the top corners were artificially rounded although the card visually appears to be in great condition. What is very significant about this card is that it actually pictures Adonis Terry aka William H Terry or Bill Terry. Adonis Terry came into his own in 1888 despite pitching a no-hitter in 1886 and leading the American Association in saves in 1887. Adonis Terry was also an offensive threat as he played several other positions and was photographed batting. It is for these reasons that the printer incorrectly identified the player as George Pinkney although this name error was clearly correct on both the numbered 1887 N172 Old Judge and the N173 Old Judge. Both Pinkney and Terry were photographed outdoors by the bleachers and in this side batting pose, the thin Adonis appears a bit more portly, like the "bigger boned" George Pinkney who did not sport a mustache. Rather than correct the error in the name, it is probable that this card was pulled from being inserted in packs or production was very abbreviated--if true, this Error would therefore be scarcer than the typical N172 Old Judge baseball card.
