1898 THE BLUE AND GRAY Civil War Boys Chromolithographs Frank Beard Illus VG

Description: THE BLUE AND THE GRAY or, THE CIVIL WAR AS SEEN BY A BOY A Story of Patriotism and Adventure in Our War for the Union Illustrated with Over 150 War Photographs and Original Drawings Written by A. R. White. Published by Topeka Book Company, Kansas City, MO. Copyright 1898; there are several iterations of this book, most with one colored frontispiece. This one has two (9 1/4” x 6 3/4”)—one of Grant at his camp during the Wilderness campaign, the other is of R. E. Lee greeting his mother after graduation from West Point. A gift inscription at the beginning of the book is dated Christmas, 1901. A gift inscription on the front endpaper is dated 1936. About half of the illustrations with the book are photographs. There are many woodcut illustrations and paintings in black and white. The book credits most of the line drawings to Frank Beard (see the note at the bottom of the copyright page illustration). Told through the eyes of a Southern boy, Ralph, conflicted about which side to join, but ultimately joining the Federal forces. “…[he] followed the flag from the beginning to the end of the war.” The book also includes historical events following the civil war—the purchase of Alaska, the Johnstown flood, Atlantic cable, annexation of Hawaii, and the Spanish-American War. As is typical of history book of this age, both sides are characterized as fighting for a “noble cause”, preservation of the Union in the North and states rights in the South. ”To the boys of this generation slavery is almost a myth. But when the Civil War broke out the blacks were held in bondage to masters who had acquired them by purchase or inheritance, and thus the represented property or wealth. The South bitterly resented any interference with an institution which many of them honestly regarded as divine. In the North opinion was divided some believing slavery to be wrong, but that it would gradually die out. All classes were unwilling that it should be extended into new territory. This difference of opinion led to the conflict which caused brave men to take up arms and arrayed brother against brother, in defense of what each believed to be just and fair.” There is a very disturbing story told by “an old negress” to the soldier, Ralph, about the unjust whipping of her man Joe and the revenge burning down of the master’s mansion and death of his little girl. Most African-Americans are portrayed as ignorant “darkeys” speaking comical dialect.
