JULES GRAVEREAUX- was a French Rosarian and the top executive at the French Department Store Le Bon Marche. In 1892, he purchased land at the village of L'Hay, where he built the first ever complete garden devoted exclusively to roses, the Roseraie de L'Hay. This was completed in 1899, the year this was printed. The village was later renamed L'Hay les Roses. The layout of this garden was created by the famous landscape architect, Edouard Andre. It began with 1,600 roses and reached a peak capacity of 8,000 roses in 1910, reflecting every type known at the time. This garden still exists and is best known as la Roseraie de l'Hay.
