Description: View title: No. 19. Palazzo Ducale e Ponte della Paglia, Venezia. Series: Italie Photographer: Carlo Naya (C. Naya à Venezia) Description: The scene is Venice, Italy, circa 1870 (give or take ten years) and local photographer Carlo Naya has set up his single lens camera on the Riva degli Schiavoni, not far from what is now the Hotel Danieli. His subject is the Palazzo Ducale, the Doge's Palace and the bridge leading to it, the Ponte della Paglia. The camera is pointing nearly due west. After he takes his first shot, he slides his lens over - or shifts the entire camera - for the second. By the time he takes it the people this side of the bridge have move and others taken their place. The columns at the left in the distance and the building beyond mark the end of the Piazzetta San Marco, which leads to the viewers right into the Piazza San Marco. It must be very early in the morning, for there are no tourists anywhere in sight. Nowadays the top of the bridge is a favorite spot for picture taking. From there, looking to the camera's right, the the famous Bridge of Sighs. This is one on several views of Italy that I am currently offering for sale. Please visit my store to see others.
