Description: I have for sale the bronze award medal for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition that was held in St. Louis, Missouri. The medal is bronze, it is 2 1/2 inches in diameter and in a high grade circulated condition with one tiny spot under the eagles beak. The medal was designed by Adolph A. Weinman (who also designed the Walking Liberty half dollar and the Mercury dime) The engraving and medal striking was done at the U.S. mint in Philadelphia. The obverse depicts two female figures above the date MCMIV (1904). The taller figure is Columbia, with her arms spread wide holding the U.S. flag. The youthful maiden at her side represents the Louisiana Purchase Territory. Emblematic of her reception into the union, the maiden is divesting herself of the cloak of France. In the background is the rising sun. At the rim it reads VNIVERSAL EXPOSITION SAINT LOVIS VNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The reverse shows an architectural tablet inscribed with BRONZE MEDAL - LOVISIANA PVRCHASE - EXPOSITION. Below the tablet are two dolphins symbolizing the nations eastern and western boundaries, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Above the table is a large American Bald Eagle with its wings spread.
