Description: Jim Thorpe, born Wa-Tho-Huk or “Bright Path”, was one of the most legendary athletes in the United States during the early 1900s. Born in the Indian Territory of Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1887. He would lose both parents and twin brother during his youth. He would attend Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where his athletic abilities would be found and nurtured by “Pop” Warner. Thorpe would be a multi-sport star at Carlisle. He excelled in track and field, football, lacrosse, baseball and ballroom dancing. He would win the 1912 Intercollegiate Ballroom Dancing championship. He would lead Carlisle to the 1912 National Collegiate Championship. He would win two gold medals at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden, in the decathlon and pentathlon. He would play professional football and baseball from 1915 to 1928. In football, he was a halfback, placekicker, punter and defensive back. In baseball, he played the outfield. He has been inducted into the Pro Football and College Football Hall of Fame. He would become a coach in both sports. He was a true legend in every sense of the word.
