Newport Oval, January 1965 Promoters Original Notes, 1965: With this, the first Australian "Newport Folk Festival" folk music, which has been rapidly increasing in popularity throughout Australia, really comes of age. The major revival of interest in folk music in this country began with isolated performances in coffee shops and halls.It flourished last year into a series of highly successful Town Hall concerts, and many Australian folk singers found recording companies eager to release their work. Now Australia has its own "Newport Folk Festival" obviously in line with the American festivals of the same name, which have been held over the past four years. During the three days and five concerts of the series, favourite numbers will be performed, and many that have been freshly lifted from our colonial past will also be sung. Newly written numbers, too, will be offered for your approval. The bill includes the names of Australia's top folk artists from New South Wales, Victoria, Brisbane and Adelaide.This is truly a representative Australian Festival, and we are hopeful that it will prove so successful that it will become the first of an annual series. This would be the logical result of the folk singing revival, which has thrown up so much outstanding Australian creative talent from a previously untapped area.
