Description: A Celebration of Chicagoland Railroads – 1935 to 1971 Shore Line Interurban Historical Society Dispatch 13 is a collection of black and white images created and collected by Bill Raia, railroader, and photographer, and curated by Michael Raia. 1935 was the beginning of a railroad industry revolution. Gleaming stainless steel and colorful lightweight passenger trains replaced heavyweight dark painted passenger cars. Diesel-electric locomotives totally revolutionized the industry, replacing steam engines. This history is documented by almost 300 railroad photographs of historic significance. Many of these photographs were previously unpublished. This railroad revolution is portrayed in this book with images and words. Pictures of all major railroads serving Chicago and Peoria are included. The book includes three maps. The first is of the Chicago downtown railroad stations. The other two maps show the railroads that served Chicago. One map shows the railroads coming to Chicago from the North, South and West. The other map shows the railroads coming from around the lake in Michigan, Indiana, and from the east and southeast. Each station on the map has a two-page spread of pictures of the rails leading into and around the station and some the famous trains that used that station.
