Description: Two original turn of the 20th century menu cards for the Whitefriars Club, the latter when they were using Anderton's Hotel in Fleet Street. To the reverse of the earlier menu appears to be the initiaon wording for a new member, reading along the lines of: What brings you here? What being this information?(followed by a welcome)I bid you a hearty welcome to our feast and I invite you to join with the brothers of a famous order in duty to the purposes of the Whitefriars Club (or similar) On the second menu, now four years on, appears just the signature of Algernon Rose. At this particular meeting of the dining club, Sir Henry Maximus Beerbohm (Max Beebohm) had delivered a well received speech. To my eye the hand is the same for both menus. I believe that Algernon Sidney Rose was the Honorary Secretary of the Whitefriars Club, and also subsequently the Honorary Secretary of the Authors Club between 1908 and his death in 1934.Members at the time included Arthur Conan Doyle and Compton Mackenzie, and he communicated by letter with many famous literary figures of the day in this position, including Thomas Hardy, HG Wells, Rudyard Kipling and John Galsworthy He himself was an author, with an interest in Fremasonry and ceremonies, and also author of Being The Autobiography of a Piano.
