Silver gilt lettering on spine is very sharp. Dust jacket very good, tiny bend at top to jacket at spine edge and along top front. Tiny indentation on back of book jacket inside the picture of the soldier. Pictures included are of the actual book being offered for sale. Beautifully illustrated with more than 800 illustrations, photographs, images, sketches, and 3-D maps that guide the reader through the years of the war. The richly textured tapestry is made complete by the words of men and women who actually witnessed the events. From the journal entries of a Confederate soldier departing for battle to the letter of an African-American soldier scrawled on the back of his wife’s letter to him, to some of the best know documents written in the hand of the makers of history, each page allows the participants to speak for themselves. The Civil War, more than any other period of American history, shaped us as a nation. Any real understanding of where we have been and where we are going must be based on knowledge of this conflict.
