Ancient Greek Bronze Coin - Ares Design

Description: History of the ArtifactThese Greek bronze coins were minted in the ancient city of Misos along the Black Sea coast of modern day northern Turkey. Founded by Greek colonists from Miletus in the 6th century B.C, it was re-settled by Athenians and incorporated into the Kingdom of Pontus in the 4th century BC. It eventually fell under Roman rule in 71 B.C. On the obverse, the coins feature Ares, Greek god of war, known for his association with violence, bloodshed, and the chaos of battle. He was one of the Twelve Olympian deities and was often portrayed as a fierce and impulsive warrior. Ares is the son of Zeus and Hera and was both revered and feared by the ancient Greeks. The reverse features an ancient Greek sword sheathed sided by the Greek initials of the city AMI (Amisos).
