Description: This book was published in 1859 and is in fair to poor condition but still fascinating. You can see the condition issues in the photos. The cover is very worn, the page binding is compromised, and the pages themselves have some spotting and staining due to age and storage. There is some pencil writing in the inside front cover from some earlier generation. Also, the first page (photo 3 above) looks like the first content page, but is marked page 13 so the first few pages are apparently missing. After page 13, the pages seem to go in order. Despite the condition, the contents are a great view into the life of women in the 1850's. There are short stories, literary reviews and poems; there are many articles on the latest fashions; there are instructions for engraving, sewing, and embroidery; there are cooking recipes and food preparation advice, including an article on 'The Boiling of Animal Food'(!); and there are wonderful illustrations including some colored plates. These are only a small sample of the interesting topics covered in this volume. I honestly don't know how I ended up with this book; it was passed down from my mother's side of the family. It is obviously heavily used but has, in my opinion, great historical value. Thanks for looking.
