Description: The story of Majolica - In 1851, a new type of Victorian pottery known as majolica was introduced at London’s Crystal Palace Exhibition – an international exposition of the day’s “works of industry.” Potter Herbert Minton had designed the pottery and his chemist, Leon Arnoux, had developed the process that resulted in majolica’s vibrant, lustrous glaze. A multicolored glaze.Majolica pieces reflected the Victorian interest in the natural sciences – botany, zoology, entomology. Pieces were modeled in high relief, featuring butterflies & other insects, flowers, leaves, fruit, shells, animals, & fish. Queen Victoria’s delight with the new pottery helped to seal its success with the general public. In order to be considered majolica, a piece had to have produced by a certain method. Very soft, porous earthenware pieces are fired at low temperatures to what’s known as the “biscuit stage.” The biscuit has a light yellow color which is covered by an opaque background enamel made from a metal-oxide like tin or lead. When the background glaze has dried, the design elements on the piece are painted with brightly colored metal-oxide glazes and the piece is fired again.*** This piece was purchased at a Garage sale. I researched the Maker's Mark on the bottom, but couldn't read it, nor could anyone I showed it to. However, knowing it's there and the style of markings shows it's age and authenticity. PLEASE SEE ALL PHOTOS- This piece looks like it was repaired at some point. As it has a flaw at the pourer spout. It wasn't that noticeable, until I started really looking at it, but it is there. It looks like someone re-set that part and filled it in but was never painted. It is still a beautiful piece and Majolica is known for holding it's value. You could repair it through an antique repair shop, or just love it the way it is! Otherwise, there is the some crazing on the bottom (I think that's why it so hard to read the MM) and normal for it's age, it is a great piece for Majolica lovers. I am NOT an expert, but I have researched it and have priced it accordingly. Enjoy!
