Antique American 2.8 LB Millville Attr. Frit "Mother" Vase 6.5"

Description: Any stand shown in photographs is not included in purchase - it is being used for display/photography purposes only. There's a good book about these types of Frit items titled "Old Glass Paperweights of Southern New Jersey" by Clarence A Newell written in 1989. Frit items like this were made as early as 1863 and are categorized as Folk Art. I have no idea how old this vase-type piece is...my guess is it may have been made in the early 1900's. These items get their name "frit" due to the powdered glass fused by heating and used for words etc.....this one being "Mother" with a wreath like garland design around it. This vase also has a nice raised (like an Alladin's Cave effect) bright multi-colored glass frit below the fused glass layer. They made toothpick holders that were smaller and plainer than this vase with the fluted top. They made perfumes and other bottles like inkwells, mantel ornaments or wig stands. Weighs approximately 2.8 lbs !! whatever you put in the top area will not make it tip over! - Bottom frit area is roughly 3.7" wide while the glass receptable on top is about 4.2" Wide. Total height is 6.6" - bottom accounts for 2.6" with clear glass receptable top at roughly 4" with the interior of the receptable about 3.5" H. In very good shape...no cracks, chips. There are some light scratches throughout both areas but displays very well. Has a concave base with a rough, indented pontil area. Refer to photos.
