Description: Unique 4 Person Antique American Black Walnut Writing Desk Custom Design and all Hand Crafted...One of a Kind. Personal History: I have been carefully Restoring Antique Furniture for over 50 years and have never seen a desk like this. Purchased this well over 30 years ago and placed it in personal storage for a time when I could fully focus on it's restoration. And that time has come. Most desks are made for one person, or a Partners Desk for 2 people to work face to face. What makes this desk so Special, is that it was designed with 2 "Hidden" pull-out Writing Tablets and their accompanying "Hidden" Lower Cabinet Doors (offering 2 personal compartments with shelves. And both doors have a unique lock & key to be used by it's designated user.) Provenance & History: This desk appears to have a Provenance of South Western Connecticut. When I purchased it I was informed that it was designed for and used by a Superior Member of the Clergy in a Church in the New Haven, CT area. In it's later years, it appears that it was owned and used by individual/s in this same area based on the writings on one of the pull out writing tablets. There is also a label on the bottom of one of the lower drawers reading: Railway Express, Conn. and also New Haven Conn and N. Y. N. H. & H.. It also came with a self adhesive return address label of a family in Waterbury, CT. Based on the Gothic Design and the unique design for use by 4 participants, this would seem likely to have been be used by clergy and their staff. Room for 4 in planning Services, Special Events, Meetings, Church Business, etc.. Circa: Mid 1800's, Custom Design, Hand Crafted. Style: Gothic Period Hand Crafted: with American Black Walnut Writing Surface: New hide of High-Grade Italian Leather Exterior Surface: Original, carefully cleaned, light finish applied to preserve it, and a restoration wax applied as the finish coat. Unique Features: Many, including... The leather top is surrounded in a beautiful crown-like molding with all 4 canted corners. Incorporated into the above side moldings are the 2 "Hidden" Writing Tables. Drawers: The unique hand crafted and lathed-turned arched Drawer Pulls with Acorns on each end. The Drawers are Hand Scribed and have Hand Crafted Dovetail Joinery. The drawers have been carefully restored to work with ease, and also stop flush and square with the body of the desk. Beautiful Gothic Designed Side panels with Select Grain Walnut inset panels. Caster Set: Antique metal caster set makes moving easy and elevates the desk to the correct height for use and comfort. The "Hidden Side Doors" offer a private compartment with shelves and a unique lock and key for secure personal use and storage. Keys: 3 separate Keys: One common key for use on all the drawers, as well as a unique key for each of the 2 "hidden" side cabinet doors. Full Canted corners on all 4 corners, from the writing surface moldings to the cabinet body, and lower base moldings, as well. A matching set of of Applied Scrolled Details, both front and back in the knee hole areas. Original Early Nails throughout. Special Notes: When I purchased this nearly 200 year old desk, it was missing the inner compartment shelves as well as one of the hidden writing tablets. All were carefully recreated using antique wood of the same period and fit and work perfectly. *The photos are part of the description so please review them carefully and feel free to make any inquiries.
