Description: These 6 plates, although crafted from the same molds, each have a distinct characteristic, telling the story of the Griffen, Smith & Hill Pottery Co. in Phoenixville, PA, where each piece was made by hand, especially the glazing. The earthenware clay was sourced directly from the soil of the area. On the back, an un-glazed number can determine which designer made the piece and an impressed stamp might be present to determine the catalog. These plates were extremely sought after during their time (early 1880's), and the factory worked 24-hours a day to get orders out. Often times, a glazing might ooze over from the back. If a chip was made in the earthenware, prior to glazing, it was just glazed over. If a tiny piece exploded during the firing, and attached onto another piece, they chipped and sanded it off. All of these plates seem to have at least one such characteristic, and despite the fine crazing found in virtually all antique Majolica pottery, all still exemplify the bright colors of the original pieces. Wonderfully preserved, these are historic collector's items. The plates are being sold collectively, but in full disclosure, in addition to the characteristics as listed above, a few plates do show some fine cracks/fissures (please also refer to the photos). Plate #2: Very fine 1/2" fissure on bottom front, does not go through to the back. Plate #4: Fine fissures running through lower front/back (see photos) Plate #5: Fine fissure running through front/back on right side (see photos) Plate #6: Crack on the back only, near base - looks like prior to glazing (see photos) Please contact me if you'd like to see more photos. Plates will be packed securely and insured for proper delivery to you.
