Description: This is a small runner or tray cloth that has been decorated with Society Silks embroidery, probably dating to the 1910s. This was s style of embroidery with naturalistic flowers taking advantage of the shine and colors of Society Silks embroidery floss. This piece was worked on a piece of white linen measuring 27" long by 16.5" wide, with a 2" laddered hem all around. The silk embroideries have been worked on each quarter, with large and small versions of the same flower and leaves. The flowers are worked in gold and the foliage in an olive green. I have included photos of them so you can see the style and shine. I have laundered and pressed this and found the fabric to be in sound shape, soft and supple and not brittle. I found no holes or rips, but I did find one freckle and one dark mark on the borders, as shown in the last 2 photos. These are getting rather rare.
