Antique W. Hulme Burslem England Cup and Saucer OPHIR Blue Pattern c.1901 #2

Description: Antique W. Hulme Burslem England Cup and Saucer OPHIR Blue Pattern c.1901 #2 - Cup is 3.5" wide and 2.5" tall. Saucer is 6", saucer is stamped either 9 or 6. The Ophir pattern by Wm. Hulme is a delightful blue-green transferware design featuring flowers and leaves. It has a scalloped edge and a slightly fluted body, with a nicely figured handle. Interestingly, this pattern was produced to commemorate the Royal Tour of 1901 onboard HMS Ophir. William Hulme and his son (also William) operated, first the North Road Pottery (from c.1901) and then built the Argyle Works. RMS Ophir was an Orient Steam Navigation Company (Orient Line) steam ocean liner that was built in 1891 and scrapped in 1922. Her regular route was between London and Sydney via the Suez Canal, Colombo and Melbourne. In 1901 she was the royal yacht HMS Ophir, taking the then Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York on a tour of the British Empire.
