Description: Beautiful antique and rare bronze medal of scene from epic Poem of lusiadas. The Lusíadas is a work of epic poetry by the Portuguese writer Luís Vaz de Camões, the first Portuguese epic published in print. Probably begun in 1556 and completed in 1571, it was published in Lisbon on 12 March 1572, in the literary period of Classicism, or Late Renaissance, three years after the author's return from the East, via Mozambique.The work consists of ten cantos, 1,102 stanzas and 8,816 verses in decasyllabic octaves, subject to the fixed rhythmic scheme AB AB AB CC – eighth royal rhyme, or Camonian. The central action is the discovery of the sea route to India by Vasco da Gama, around which other episodes in the history of Portugal are evoked, glorifying the Portuguese people. Considered the most important work of Portuguese-language literature, it is often compared to Virgil's Aeneid (century. I B.C.). Written in Homeric fashion, The Lusíadas is often regarded as the national epic of Portugal, much as Virgil's Aeneid was to the ancient Romans, or Homer's Iliad and Odyssey to the ancient Greeks. The poem evokes the period preceding the retaking of Valencia in 1102 by the Almoravids, as well as that of the Almohadas, whose capital is Marrakech, and the period preceding the Battle of the Three Kings. The medal was made by the sculptor Humberto J. Mendes. Has 9.2 cm x 7.5 cm ; 5 mm thickness and weighs: 280 Grams.It´s numbered 328. Only 350 were made.
