Unlike the Coconut Palm, this species will tolerate hard frosts down to approximately 25F! This makes is an extremely desirable palm for much of Florida, especially Central FL where the temperature can occasionally dip into the mid-20s. It's also a great palm for much of California, where Coconut Palms are almost unheard of because of the cooler temperatures. Related distantly to the Coconut Palm, this palm is already becoming a favorite of palmophiles everywhere. If you're in zone 9b or higher, give it a shot! If you're in zone 9a, like me, it could be worth trying to grow it if you only have to protect it for a few nights each winter.
