Description: Berlin, GERMANY - Unter den Lindon, Haus der Schweix, Café Victoria: Berlin is the capital of Germany and one of the 16 states of Germany. With a population of 3.5 million people, it is the second most populous city proper and the seventh most populous urban area in the European Union. Located in northeastern Germany on the banks of Rivers Spree and Havel, it is the centre of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which has about six million residents from over 180 nations. Due to its location in the European Plain, Berlin is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. Around one-third of the city's area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes. First documented in the 13th century, Berlin became the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg (1417-1701), the Kingdom of Prussia (1701–1918), the German Empire (1871–1918), the Weimar Republic (1919–1933) and the Third Reich (1933–1945). Berlin in the 1920s was the third largest municipality in the world. After World War II, the city was divided; East Berlin became the capital of East Germany while West Berlin became a de facto West German exclave, surrounded by the Berlin Wall (1961–1989). Following German reunification in 1990, Berlin was once again designated as the capital of all Germany. The White Border Era (1915-30) postcard contains a charming note: "Dear Ritchie: Thanks very much for your cute letter card and its bon voyage message. Please forgive us, but we are sending these cards in one envelope, as it costs 6¢ postage per card, and as you know we are traveling on a shoestring! And we have hundreds of cards to send, "Jesus though." We went over to Tempelhof at sunset Sunday night and saw four planes take off in different directions. Then we went to the Neue Welt, a monstrous outdoor eating place which has been likened to Coney Island. There was a marvelous orchestra on the grounds and there were two large indoor banquet halls filled with people. One had 3,000 seated. There were hundreds of tables on the grounds, and everyone was eating frankfurters and potato salad and drinking beer. And what beer! We have had it several times a day. And wine is excellent too - and cheap. Tonight, we ate outdoors on a long narrow balcony overlooking the Kurfurstendamin. We are at #57, which is one of the 4 big boulevards-UnterdThis White Border Era (1915-30) postcard is in good condition. G.M.B.W. 50.
