Description: Offering two Colonial Massachusetts receipts, 5 ¼ x 6 ¼, from the notable merchants EDWARD CLARKE AND FITCH POOL, who ran a chandlery on Greene’s Wharf in Boston in the 1760s. EDWARD CLARKE and FITCH POOL ran a chandlery on Greene’s Wharf in Boston in the 1760s. They were also ship owners who leased vessels for commercial purposes. The 1766 receipt is for nails, glass and other items. The 1769 receipt lists, among other items, gunpowder “into the province Magazine from the Brik Suky, Isaac Coleman commandr. BYFIELD LYDE, the purchaser, was a Harvard graduate, loyalist and son-in-law of Gov. JONATHAN BELCHER. Byfield fled with the Royal Army to Halifax in 1776. Byfield’s grandfather was NATHANIEL BYFIELD, who left the bulk of his estate to his grandson. Docketing on the verso of both. One noting “Byfield Lyde, Esq. account of charges on Powder [from] Brig.
