Description: Thanks for taking a look at my ancient Catuvellauni Whaddon Goat Silver Unit coin. This coin was minted in present day south-central Britain in the 1st century BC, between 60-20 BC. The obverse shows a full face and curly hair. The reverse has a goat-like figure with horns and decorative circles surrounding. This particular coin was found via metal detector in 1995 in Cow Roast, UK. It was formerly a part of the Geoff Cottam Collection. Please message with any questions! The Catuvellauni were a Celtic tribe that lived in ancient Britain before the Roman conquest. They were centered around the town of Verulamium (near modern St. Albans) and the surrounding areas of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and southern Cambridgeshire. They were a prosperous agricultural society. The Catuvellauni were defeated by Julius Caesar in 54 BC, but expanded north and northwest after the defeat. The tribe is thought to have led the resistance against the Roman conquest in 43 AD. The name Catuvellauni may mean "war-chiefs" in the ancient Gaulish Celtic language. Some rulers of the Catuvellauni include Cunobelinus, Cassivellaunus, Tasciovanus, Caratacus, and Togodumnus Epaticcus.
