Description: Charles Laurie, English Romantic Engraving from the 16th C. Stipple Engraving after Joshua Reynolds Shipped with USPS Priority Mail. Name: Lady CockburnArtist: Charles Laurie after Sir Joshua ReynoldsDate: 1775Publisher: Frances H. RobertsonSize: 22" c 15" Charles Laurie (1755-1836) was an English Romantic engraver who spent the majority of his life in London and the royal circles there. During the 16th and 17th century, portraits were in England, as in Europe, the easiest and most profitable way for an artist to make a living, and the English tradition continued to show the relaxed elegance of the portrait-style traceable to Van Dyck. The leading portraitists were amount others Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Obviously Reynolds was a huge influence on the artists of his time, including Charles Laurie, who relied upon Reynolds for the subject matter of this master Stipple Engraving. Laurie is represented in the National Portrait Gallery, London with three of his original portrait works. Laurie's output was robust and today there is a good market for engravings by Laurie on-line. This beautiful stipple engraving of Lady Cockburne is after after Sir Joshua Reynolds and is a glorious example of the engraving process as well as Laurie's skill. The fur lined velvet dress and the bird's feathers are shown in realistic detail. After some study it was revealed that Laurie cleverly incorporated the date as well as Reynold's name in the brocaded border of Lady Cockburne's cloak. This Stipple Engraving from 1775 is in great condition with no marks from previous framing and minor pale foxing in the borders. Please note the photos, they are part of the description.
