Two works by William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616). Shakespeare, often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon ," is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. The Life and Death of King Richard the Second, commonly called Richard II. A history play believed to have been written by William Shakespeare in approximately A.D. 1595. It is based on the life of King Richard II of England , who ruled from 1377 - 1399. The play spans only the last two years of Richard's life, from 1398 to 1400. The first Act begins with King Richard sitting majestically on his throne in full state, having been requested to arbitrate a dispute between two noblemen involving the squandering of money ... and a murder. Following the events of Shakespeare's play, Richard II, Henry Bolingbroke has succeeded to the throne of England as King Henry IV. Henry IV ( 1367 - 1413 ), also known as Henry Bolingbroke , was King of England from 1399 to 1413. Henry IV, Part 1 depicts a span of history that begins with Hotspur's battle at Homildon in Northumberland against Douglas late in A.D. 1402 and ends with the defeat of the rebels at Shrewsbury in the middle of 1403. From the start, it has been an extremely popular play with the public and critics alike. Henry IV, Part 2 is often seen as an extension of aspects of the first part of Henry IV, rather than a straightforward continuation of the historical narrative. It places more emphasis on the highly popular character of Falstaff and introduces other comic figures as part of his entourage, including Ancient Pistol , Doll Tearsheet, and Justice Robert Shallow.
