Designed and created around the time of the Civil War, legend has it that the Cat’s Paw was an experimental model, designed and built to become a Brunswick production table. Although the J.M. Brunswick & Balke Company (1873-1884) was known to document their products, the only original representation of a Cat’s Paw is a representation that was most probably an original designer’s concept. The Cat’s Paw table was never put into production. Only a handful of experimental examples are known to exist. The search for this table began in the 1970’s after a rumor surfaced that a Cat’s Paw was sitting in pieces in a warehouse, somewhere in the Midwest. After some investigation, the table was located and purchased by a noted collector in 2007. It was professionally restored to exacting specifications. The table is so rare that many Brunswick dealers with decades of experience have never actually seen one or have never seen a photograph of a genuine Cat’s Paw. The Cat’s Paw’s early influences can be seen in the one of the most popular and prized pool tables ever produced, the Brunswick Monarch. The Monarch has been so popular over the years that reproductions of the original Monarch began appearing in the 1980’s. Many genuine examples of the Monarch exist today. The Brunswick Monarch can trace much of its heritage to the Cat’s Paw. This Cat’s Paw measures 4.5’ x 9’, the most desirable table size. The table has rosewood rails, burled walnut sides with teak, tulipwood and ivory inlays. All parts bear the serial number “0098”. All components are original and have been restored and detailed to ensure complete authenticity and originality. This table will be the centerpiece of any game room, anywhere in the world.
