Description: 1930's Composition Ideal 16" Ginger Doll - Shirley Temple Predecessor Before there was Shirley, there was GINGER. Ideal created Ginger in the early 1930s and continued making her until 1937. The contract to manufacture the licensed likeness of Shirley Temple was obtained in late 1934, and the first run of Shirley was released for Christmas of 1934. But Ginger remained a beloved doll for many young girls. It seems Ginger was Ideal's first concept of Shirley. Ideal ended up using the Ginger body parts for their Shirley Temple dolls. (Perhaps that was their plan all along, since Ginger's body so resembled the real Shirley.) This 1930's Ideal 16" Ginger doll is beautiful! Her condition is good - she has clear brown eyes and a full ginger-colored mohair wig. She has crazes and some cracking on her composition, but all have been addressed and filled. She wears an adorable period-correct outfit and hat, with replacement shoes. As most Ideal Ginger dolls, she is unmarked. But she can be identified in books about early Ideal composition dolls. Her most identifiable feature is her dimpled chin. Because most Gingers are not marked, they are often not identified and preserved. To find one in good condition is rare.
