Crisis "Holocaust Hymns" CD (1978-81) Death in June, Sol Invictus

Description: Here we have a crucial CD compilation from the earliest days of UK punk, the complete works of a band whose two songwriters would later lay the foundation for the apocalyptic folk movement, Brit firebrands CRISIS: Holocaust Hymns, released in 2005 by the Apop label, now out of print. This disc assembles the band's entire discography from 1978-1980, along with demos, live tracks and alternate versions, splendidly remastered and packing a wicked punch. Crisis exploded onto the punk scene in the late Seventies amidst the British hardcore punk movement and was often featured in Rock Against Racism live showcases. These political affiliations earned them comparisons to the likes of The Clash. However, Crisis quickly became known for a decidedly non-peacenik attitude which beget more thrashing off the stage than on. And however much they would contextualize their relation with working-class rights, they bore only a slight resemblance to the loutish Oi! sound. Instead, Crisis would take their youthful anger and lock it down tight with restrained lyrical phrasing and strict rhythms. The musical result was a harsh yet tightly leashed poeticism of violent urgency that reminds us of pre-Joy Division punkers Warsaw. Members include Douglas P. and Tony Wakeford, who wrote nearly all the material. (The track "Back in the USSR" is NOT a Beatles cover.) Those two would later expand upon the Crisis concept with their dark, neo-folk group Death in June, then Wakeford would found and front the similarly inclined Sol Invictus. Both Tony and Douglas would also put in numerous guest shots with Current 93 and Nurse With Wound as well. Fans of these artists should definitely grab this CD for a taste of where it began.
