Description: "On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection"; New York, D. Appleton and Company, 1860. This is the First US edition 2nd state; F378 in the Freeman Bibliographic Database. Contains the text of 1st English edition, with no statement of "Revised Edition" to the title page. Has 3 quotes to the verso of the half title page; ie, facing the title page. 432 pp. In original pebbled brown cloth, with blindstamped designs and rules to front and rear boards, and gilt lettering to spine. Professionally rebacked, with the original spine laid on, and original endpapers retained. Ex-library, from the Library of the San Francisco Theological Seminary, with various stamps including one indicating the book was given as a gift to the seminary library by J. Hudson Ballard. Faded call letters to spine. There are two handwritten notations on the front free endpaper: 1) with Ballard's name and "1839 Arlington" (possibly a partial address?), and 2) "USC Library / Oct, 1908". There are no other indicators related to the USC Library. Some dampstain to lower fore corner affecting the first several leaves. Foldout diagram (facing page 108, as called for in the Instruction to Binder at the end of the Index) is present and in good order though the paper has browned a bit with some offset to prior and following leaves. Scattered foxing throughout. Otherwise, leaves are supple and clean. Binding is solid and square. See photos for details on these condition notes. J. Hudson Ballard (1880 - 1974) was a Presbyterian minister, educator, psycholgist, author, lecturer, and religious philosopher. He was a graduate of the University of Southern California in 1909, received his MA from Columbia University in 1910, graduated from Union Seminary and received a PhD from New York University both in 1915, and held memberships in Phi Beta Kappa and the American Philosophical Association. He Joined the faculty of Occidental College in 1926 as head of the Department of Religion. In 1941 Ballard Joined the faculty of San Francisco Theological Seminary as Vice President and head of the department of Christian psychology, and retired from there in 1952. Ballard spent the rest of his life writing, and travelling the country delivering lectures and seminars. Comparison of the "USC Library / Oct, 1908" notation to Ballard's graduation from USC in 1909 suggests that the two are related. It is possible that Ballard bought this copy from the library at USC while a student there. The "Library of the / San Francisco Theological / Seminary / Gift From / J Hudson Ballard" stamp makes sense given his role as Vice President and head of the department of Christian psychology there. We can only speculate on whether that occurred prior to, upon, or after his retirement from the seminary. Given the potential conflict of Darwin's theory of evolution with various orthodox Christian beliefs and teachings (a conflict that Darwin repeatedly tried to dismiss, insisting that his scientific theories were not incompatible with a belief in God the Creator), it is of special interest that this edition belonged to a Presbyterian seminary library.
