Minaret of the Principal Mosque of Siout, Upper Egypt October 13, 1838 - "This morning, like all mornings here lovely... At Siout, it is the see of a Coptic bishop, and is affirmed to be the place where the Virgin and Infant Saviour took refuge from their oppressor. It is said many Copts, in this belief, come here to die. Upon entering the town the first object which presents itself is the large mosque with its lofty minaret of which I made a sketch."
