Description: Children of Kaywana 1961 Kaywana Stock 1961 Kaywana Blood 1962 The entire trilogy by Edgar Mittelholzer: 'Children of Kaywana', 'Kaywana Stock' and 'Kaywana Blood', are essential reading for anyone truly, or honestly interested in the complex country known as Guyana today. Complex, because most people know this country only as formerly 'British Guiana', not realizing that most of 16th, 17th, and 18th century founding and colonizing history of Guyana is not English at all, but Flemish/Dutch, and French, and that Sir Walter Raleigh came to that coastal area AFTER the Dutch who began trading with the Indigenous tribes since around 1580. Mittelholzer, mostly of Swiss and African ancestry, in his Kaywana Trilogy reworked historical facts about Guyana he researched into 'fiction', keeping many of the Dutch names of real characters, whose descendants exist in and out of Guyana today, in this sense Mittelholzer faced squarely, or very honestly, the deep questions and freedoms that cross-cultural living and miscegenation create within us. This is highly perceptive and permissive writing, powerful and vivid internally and externally. His focus in his trilogy is on HOW Guyana's diverse peoples can become a nation rooted in ONE identity, based not on political ideas but on education, culture, and everyday human interaction, so he changed some historical truths about the real characters in his trilogy to integrate them into this concept of identity, for example the main female character Kaywana was not an half English/indigenous girl, but a totally Indigenous Carib female who was traded to the real 17th century Dutch pioneer/trader in Guyana, Aert Groenwegen by arrangement with a tribe she was a 'love slave' of, since the various tribes took each other's females in order to increase their population; Mittelholzer liked the fact that even in Guyana's ancient indigenous history cross-tribal-cultural intimacy was a tradition, and he showed how this is a major component in the concept of Guyanese identity. 'Kaywana Blood' is the final 3rd book in the trilogy, but the first two" 'Children of Kaywana' and 'Kaywana Stock' really carry the gist of the trilogy. The book you have purchased.
