Elizabeth Nihell: A Treatise on the Art of Midwifery; reprint 1760 work

Description: I am a retired ObGyn and medical historian who has collected books and instruments for over 40 years. Age and downsizing have prompted me to pass along my items to younger collectors with the space to display them. As time permits, I will be listing approximately 300 books and over 100 instruments on eBay. This is a 1994 reprint of Elizabeth Nihell's "A Treatise on the Art of Midwifery", first published in 1760 in London. This burgundy leather-bound book with gilded edges and gold stamping was number 1368 of a limited edition of 3000 published as part of "The Classics of Obstetrics & Gynecology Library". It is in pristine condition and unmarked except for my nameplate on the inside front cover. It measures ~ 8 x 5.5 x 1.5 " and weighs ~1 lb 12 oz. Please look at the photos. Elizabeth Nihell (1723-c1776) was a Professed Midwife in London, and one of the few who were literate enough to write books. The rationale for her treatise is clear in its extended title: "A Treatise on the Art of Midwifery. Setting forth various abuses therein, especially as to the practice with Instruments: the whole serving to put all rational enquirers in a fail way of very safely forming their own judgment upon the question: Which is best to employ in cases of pregnancy and lying-in, a man-midwife; or, a midwife."
