A 1931 hardcover compiled with the cooperation of the National Recreation Association. Published by The Parents Institute in New York. 175 pages. In good condition. An intriguing look nearly 90 ago into the past. See what your parents, grandparents and etc. did for entertainment when they were kids in a time before television, video games and cell phones. Some of these entries would be difficult nowadays, like make a mandolin out of a cigar box and building a desk out of wooden orange crates. I'm not sure some kids should be playing mumblety peg. But there are numerous interesting games and activities that can easily be done today. It lists games to play for every holiday, indoor games, sewing projects and much more. This book has a wonderful introduction highlighting how busy families are "dashing one way for their pastimes and children rushing another" and bemoans the good old days of recreation at home. If that sentiment isn't truer than it was 90 years ago, I don't know what is! Tons of fun family activities are outlined in this book and categorized in a way so you can find something fun in a snap. Maybe reading some old books can be the first of many family nights in!
