Description: This is a magnificent and Fine Antique Old 18th c. European German Alpine Hiking Hunting Oil Painting on Canvas, depicting a late 18th - early 19th century image of a lone traveler, an experienced Alpine hiker with a walking stick and snowshoes affixed to his backpack, asking directions from two Alpine locals, one of which carries a large hunting rifle. In the surrounding landscape, several animals, and a majestic mountain vista can be seen. The level of detail in this painting is astounding, especially visible in the grass and foliage throughout the image. This degree of artistic precision must have taken weeks, if not months. This artwork appears to be unsigned, shockingly. However, I suspect that this painting is by the hand of a well-known and widely acclaimed German painter. Perhaps you recognize the artist or their work? Approximately 15 x 17 3/8 inches. Good condition for nearly two centuries of age, with moderate fine spiderweb craquelure throughout the painted surface, mild scuffing, scratches, and edge wear (please see photos carefully.)
