Description: Fletcher Martin WPA Artist Modernist Stonelain Hand Painted Charger Mint condition hand painted heavy ceramic charger designed and painted by listed Artist Fletcher Martin (1904-1979) and produced by Stonelain pottery in conjunction with Associated American Artists in the 1940s. Associated American Artists was known for producing limited edition prints starting in 1934 to provide work and wages for some of the most prominent American artists during the depression including Thomas Hart Benton, Peggy Bacon, Aaron Bohrod, John Steuart Curry, Luigi Lucioni, Marion Greenwood, Georges Schreiber, and Grant Wood. These prints are highly collected today and have consistently increased in value. AAA later branching out into Stonelain pottery, fabric, and housewares such as ashtrays, playing cards, and lamp shades as vehicles for work in abstract and other modern styles. Many of the noted print makers also contributed designs for Stonelain. The predominant style of the AAA artists was what is now termed 'Regionalism." Fletcher Martin was an important Regionalist artist. He gained national recognition as an artist by working as a war correspondent for LIFE magazine. This took place in 1943 and the article was thirteen pages in length. His art was also featured on the cover of the magazine. He also painted murals for the WPA and taught art at various colleges. His favorite subject was sports particularly boxing. This large 12.5" diameter charger fits in that genre showing a toreador. No 2 Stonelain pieces are identical as each was hand painted by the artist. Signed with the artist's signature on the front and the impressed Stonelain mark on the back. Master potters William Soini and Fraces Server produced the actual pottery to be painted. It's their intertwined "SS" initials found inside the Stonelain maker's mark . Stonelain /AAA ceramics were made from the late 1930s up to 1952. Wonderful example of mid-century American art in mint condition. PLEASE CHECK MY FEEDBACK AND BUY WITH CONFIDENCE.
