Hartley on the lower left corner of the painting.Measures approximately 15 inches by 22 inches and has an ornate gold gesso frame.On the frame there are a few minor blemishes on two of the corners, a small spot of gold paint missing on the top and the upper right corner has been repaired (you can see this from the back, not the front).There are no known issues to the painting.Beautiful landscape painting featuring two people on the shoreline and two in the small boat in a serene colonial setting. Would be a stunning addition to any home or office. Hartley was an American painter and missionary who is best known for his painting trips to Western Africa. The American Antiquarian Society has a large repository of his letters and sketchbooks so you can visit their website. He married Emily Griswold (1838-1906) and they did missionary work together throughout Africa. Hartley was originally from Scotland. As an artist and missionary he traveled extensively throughout the United States and eventually settled in California around 1909. This auction is for 1 oil on board.
