Description: JAPANESE ANTIQUE CARVED & PAINTED WOODEN RANMA (TRANSOM) OR PANEL (?) This is an antique carved and painted wooden “Ranma” or one-sided transom panel. Size: 22” length x 9.5” height x 5/8” thickness (56 cm x 24 cm x 1.6 cm). I purchased this Ranma in 1969 at a small antiques shop on the outskirts of Nagoya while on a business trip in Japan. It was a nice souvenir of the trip and this Ranma has been displayed above an interior doorway in my house since then, away from sunlight. The carving is beautifully done, featuring twisted Cypress or Pine (?) trees and also some Japanese flags or banners at the top of the panel, with colored black stripes. Research explains: “Architectural details called ranma are often found above doors in traditional Japanese houses and buildings”. “These details can be anything from simple shoji-style dividers to elaborate wooden carvings, and they serve as a traditional welcome to visitors of the head of the household.”(However, since this panel is only finished on one side, perhaps it is a panel from an antique Japanese tansu chest or other form of furniture?)I am not a dealer, but rather an individual disposing of many decades of accumulations. Please contact me with any questions. Also please see my wide variety of other items currently listed on eBay. I WILL BE UNABLE TO SHIP FROM FEB 28 THROUGH APRIL 7, 2025.
