ABOUT JEANETTE MacDONALD- Jeanette MacDonald (1903 –1965) was an American singer and popular actress. She is best remembered for her musical films of the 1930s. She starred in 29 films during the 1930s and 1940s. Four of those films were nominated for Best Picture Oscars. They include: "The Love Parade" (1929 with Maurice Chevalier), "One Hour With You" (1932), "Naughty Marietta," (1935) (her first film with Nelson Eddy, who became her most popular singing partner) and "San Francisco" (1936- with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy). MacDonald was considered one of the most influential sopranos in the 20th century. She was also a popular recording artist, earning 3 Gold Records. MacDonald is credited with introducing opera to movie audiences and inspiring a generation of singers. After years of success as an actress and singer in the movies, MacDonald later continued working in opera concerts, radio and television. Jeanette MacDonald started as a Broadway chorus girl in 1920 and rapidly reached stardom in stage musicals and operettas. After actor Richard Dix saw her perform, Paramount Pictures to gave her a screen test. Director Ernst Lubitsch starred MacDonald in several leading roles in sophisticated musicals with actor Maurice Chevalier (including "The Love Parade, "Love Me Tonight, "The Merry Widow" and "One Hour With You." From there, the actress signed with MGM in 1933 and became one of their most enduring stars. MacDonald and baritone actor/singer Nelson Eddy became one of the most popular singing partnerships in the history of film. At the height of their popularity, their team was known as "America's Sweethearts." The pair was starred in a string of saccharine musicals that brought millions of American and European customers to the box office. Though their popularity waned after World War II, the MacDonald/Eddy films were later called "camp." Their innocent-age and sometimes corny musical numbers like "Indian Love Call" were parodied and ridiculed by cynics and stand-up comedians. Their movies together included "Naughty Marietta" (1935), "Rose Marie" (1936, with James Stewart), "Maytime," (1937), "Sweethearts" (1938) and "New Moon" (1942). MacDonald also starred as a single in "Smilin' Through," (1941) "I Married an Angel" and "Cairo" (both in 1942). MGM even teamed her up with their famous canine star "Lassie" in "The Sun Comes Up" in 1949.
