JOHN BARRYMORE SR. - SHOW BILL SIGNED CIRCA 1939 - HFSID 226402 JOHN BARRYMORE A showbill for a production of Outward Bound, signed by Barrymore in blue ink Show Bill signed: "John Barrymore" in pencil on pg 7. 16p, 6x9. Chicago Stage Bill for the Harris Theatre's production of Outward Bound, beginning November 27, 1939. John Barrymore (1882-1942) debuted on Broadway in 1903 and in films in 1914. His one chance for greatness occurred in 1922, when he played Hamlet; even British audiences hailed Barrymore's performance as one of the best, if not the best, interpretation of the melancholy Dane. Eventually, Barrymore abandoned the theatre altogether for the movies, where he was often cast more for his looks than his talent. With talkies, Barrymore's days as a romantic lead had passed but his exquisite voice and superb bearing guaranteed him stronger film roles than he had in the silents. His heavy drinking caused him to degenerate into a man old before his time. He was 60 when he died of pneumonia and cirrhosis of the liver. Lightly creased. Paper loss from previous adhesive, not effecting the signature. Minor tear at right edge on front cover. x1-inch stain on back cover. Overall, fine condition. Accompanied by a 7x9 b/w unsigned photo of Barrymore in a still from the play My Dear Children at the Belasco Theatre. Creased. Two stamps and pencil notes on verso (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine condition. Two items. See more material from these signers: JOHN BARRYMORE SR. See more listings in our ACTORS & ACTRESSES (13,404) category.
