Every show has been listened to for this purpose. In many cases I will tweak the audio if I can, or edit together the best quality parts of multiple copies of the same show. I do eliminate shows in which I feel the sound is too poor to be enjoyable for listening. Only in very rare circumstances, when the show is extremely hard to find will I include shows with poor sound. Of course, these are vintage shows, so some imperfections should be expected. *I try wherever possible to find the most unusual and hardest to find shows for each star and I update my sets regularly. *In the case of stars who appeared in a high volume of shows, I will offer multiple sets to keep costs low, but variety of shows high. Here is what you get in the John Payne set – CD #1 Lux Radio Theatre “Morning Glory” (1942 – drama) – John stars opposite Judy Garland and Adolphe Menjou in this story of a girl struggling to become an actress and the writer who helps her along the way and falls in love with her. Adolphe Menjou reprises his role from the 1933 film of the same name, which also starred Katharine Hepburn and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. 1 hour. CD #2 Lux Radio Theatre “Wings of the Navy” (1940 – romantic adventure drama) – John stars opposite George Brent and Olivia De Havilland in this story of two brothers who are navy fliers and the girl they both love. All three stars reprise their roles from the 1939 film of the same name. 1 hour. CD #3 Lux Radio Theatre “Miracle on 34th Street” (1948 – Christmas comedy) – John stars opposite Maureen O’Hara and Edmund Gwenn in this Christmas classic of a lawyer who sets out to prove a Macy’s Santa Claus is the real thing! All three stars reprise their roles from the 1947 film of the same name. 1 hour. CD #4 Screen Guild Theater “The Age of Innocence” (1944 – romantic drama) – John stars opposite Merle Oberon in this romantic drama of forbidden love in the 1870’s. (Note: the 1934 film of the same name had starred Irene Dunne and John Boles. 30 minutes. Family Theater “The Promise” (1952 – drama) – John stars opposite Bonita Granville as a couple having marital problems who are involved in a car accident and aren’t sure whether or not they’re dead. Lizabeth Scott hosts this original drama. 30 minutes. CD #5 Lux Radio Theatre “Poppy” (1938 – comedy) – John stars opposite his real-life wife, Anne Shirley and W.C. Fields in this comedy of a carnival medicine salesman and his daughter and the trouble than ensues when she falls in love with the mayor’s son. W.C. Fields reprises his role from the 1936 film of the same name, which had also starred Rochelle Hudson and Richard Cromwell. 1 hour. CD #6 Suspense “Two Sharp Knives” (1945 - suspense) – John stars opposite Frank McHugh in this story of two cops trying to solve a murder. Story by Dashiell Hammett. 30 minutes. Joan Davis Time "Is Joan Married to John Payne?" (1948 - comedy) - Hard to find! Joan gets into a mess when she pretends to be married to movie star John Payne. A very funny show! 30 minutes.
