Early on in his he set his eye on becoming a sculptor. It was at 15 he studied sculpting as an apprentice with Maurice Glickmen at the Educational Allaince in NYC for 2 years. Then New York University for another 2 years. He won a scholarship to Yale where he studied for another 2 years. In 1943 he founded Gehenna Press (one of Americas premier art presses). After WWII he obtains his BA from the New School for Social Research. Moving to Massachusetts USA he taught at many universities Worcester Art Museum, Smith College, Hampshire College. Over his life he was the recipient of 6 honorary doctorates member of multiple international academies. Did extensive work for and with the Jewish cultural communities.Leonard Baskin works are in the collections of the finest museums around the world. His scuptures appear in public places around the including in the Franklyn Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washinton DC.
