Description: Introduction by Coretta Scott King Illustrated photographs A determination to become one of America's most popular entertainers. Born into a privileged household in 1917, Home divided her youth between a self-contained, black middle-class neighborhood in Brooklyn and several towns in the racially segregated South. Her professional stage debut took place amid surroundings that were even more exclusive. At the age of 16, she became a chorus girl at an exotic cabaret that featured only black performers: the celebrated Cotton Club in Harlem. In 1937, Home left New York City to tour with Noble Sissle's Society Orchestra as a featured vocalist. She joined Charlie Barnet's jazz band three years later, and in 1941 she launched her career as a solo nightclub performer. Her heartfelt renditions of "Good for Nothing Joe," "The Man I Love," and other tunes helped her become a national sensation and the first black singer to be heavily promoted by the movie industry. Her appearances in several Hollywood musicals—including Stormy Weather and Cabin in the Sky—added to her rising fame. Always presented as a model of respectability and glamour, the light-skinned Home managed to cross over the color barrier and win the acceptance of white society. Yet her personal triumphs did not blind her to the plight of her fellow blacks. Throughout her career, Lena Home has tackled civil rights issues in the same way that she has approached her art: with passion and pride. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- \ International bidders should email me for a shipping cost BEFORE bidding.
