Description: Description:This rare medal is one of 50 in Franklin Mint's "OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES" Series. The set was issued from 1976 to 1980 under the direction of the International Olympic Committee to commemorate the greatest moments in the modern Olympic games beginning in 1896.The obverse features Marathon racer Dorando Pietri of Italy being helped to the finish line.The reverse features a laurel wreath with the Olympic Rings symbol and information on the featured athletes. "In the famous 1908 Olympic Marathon race Dorando Pietri was helped to finish first." Although Pietri crossed the finish line first, Johnny Hayes (USA) was declared the winner. Pietri was too disoriented and exhausted to finish on his own. He was disqualified for the assistance he received.Only 5,382 silver copies of this medal were issued.Weight: 20 gramsDiameter: 40 mmThickness: 3 mmThe original storage capsule is included.
