Well before the explosion of TV police procedurals in the '90s, there were notable private detectives doing serviceable gumshoeing in the pursuit of law and order. One of the best was the Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer series in the '80s, starring Stacy Keach as the world-weary Hammer, chucking off hard-boiled bons mots as he got ever-more entangled in the seamy underbelly of murder and conspiracy. This DVD includes More Than Murder, with cool cameos by an assortment of '80s character actors. In this January 1984 made-for-TV movie, private eye Hammer is asked to be a bodyguard for a high-rolling poker player, a job which he refuses. The game is robbed by two masked gunmen. The men parachute down to the ground but are stopped by Hammer's friend Captain Pat Chambers. However, he is shot in the back by a third gunman and put in hospital seriously wounded. Pat was tipped off about a drug deal but his informant is then killed. When drugs are found in Pat's car, it is part of a plan to frame him and he is arrested as an accessory to drug trafficking. Hammer vows to help him clear his name and find the shooters and the drug dealers. Assistant District Attorney Barrington dislikes Hammer and believes that Chambers is guilty. There's no denying the appeal of Keach and the jaded Mike Hammer character. Keach was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1984 for his tough-as-hardtack portrayal of Hammer, and revisiting this episode is a reminder of both the great chops Keach possessed, and of the appeal of the tough-guy private investigator as seen through the jaundiced eye of Mickey Spillane.
