Miniature Mata Ortiz Pottery Pinwheel 5 Point Star Pattern Southwest Native Art

Description: Untitled Document Gallery Store Elena Mera I seldom sell miniature from the village of Mata Ortiz because of their fragility. One artists whose work I will gladly offer is that of Elena Mera. Ms. Mera has the dedication and love of the craft to put in the extra effort for these miniature pieces to assure their durability. She uses the native red clay, forming thicker wall, and she fires them extra long but at lower temperatures to assure a harder vessel. Ms. Mera's skills in fanciful festive designs are well known. This piece has a blackened 5 pointed star surrounded by 5 electric patterns in both black and white glazing The crosshatch pattern of the star extends from the points to the underside of the pottery tying this artwork into one complete whole. She even manages to fit her signature on the bottom. The textures and designs are all an homage to the Artists ancestors, the Paquime Culture of the Casas Grandes Region from 1000 years in the past. This Mata Ortiz is modern Chihuahua culture married with the ancient spirit of the region. For anyone who has yearned for at least one piece of artwork for their home, but shy away from the prohibitive costs, this is the perfect opportunity to get an authentic and true piece of Latin American Folk Art at an amazing price. Pottery this size is to small for rings. However, I will supply an acrylic stand for your displaying option. Width - 3 inches Height - 1.5 inches Mouth - 0.75 inches Weight - 3 ounces__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mata Ortiz is legendary, both the village and the pottery taking its name. In the 70's a young man began experimenting with recreating ancient pottery he would come across. He used the same clay sand mixtures from materials found in the area in which the ancients lived and made their pottery. The same firing techniques using the same local materials eventually created the same magnificent results. Half a century later and much of the village of Mata Ortiz has taken on these incredible skills for creating masterpieces, with each artist contributing hers and his own sense of beauty. The designs are bold, earthy and individualistic. Paint brushes consisting of one or two human hairs create the finest lines. Images revealed through carvings are created by nearly microscopic sharpened points. Paints are developed from minerals found in the surrounding desert. Many colors are only revealed after intense firing at very high temperatures. These creations are truly unique transformations that only this small little region of the world can create from it's own soil. I have been tangentially around Mata Ortiz for 30 years. Now I am spiritually bound by their overwhelming beauty and intense and intricate designs. When I look at one of the pieces, I feel I am meeting in person the artists who created this, and am visiting their home. Mata Ortiz is legendary, both the village and the pottery taking its name.
